2019 Australia & New Zealand

March 6th - 31st     Hosted By: Colin & Dianne Markusson

ITINERARY  (Meals as indicated: (B) Breakfast, (L) Lunch, (D) Dinner.)

06 March - Depart Canada for New Zealand (D).

07 March - Cross International Dateline.

08 March - Auckland (B/D):  Upon arriving into Auckland, you will be transferred to your waiting hotel room.  This evening, enjoy a welcome reception.  A chance to get to know your fellow adventurers.

09 March - Auckland (B):  The morning tour is a journey of discovery designed to explore the history and sights as well as see how Aucklanders live and play.  After lunch, a 30 minute drive from downtown Auckland brings you to the Arataki Centre, where the sweeping decks give breathtaking panoramic views from the Talisman Sea to the Pacific Ocean.  Head further west and experience the power of the wild and rugged west coast.  Feel the black sand beneath your feet as you stroll along some of the most awe-inspiring beaches the world has to offer.

10 March - Auckland - Embarkation (B/D):  This morning is yours before you are transferred to the port for embarkation on the Holland American Noordam, your home for the next 14 days/13 nights.

11 March - Tauranga (Rotorua) (B/L/D):  The curved shoreline of the Bay of Plenty - known in Maori as Te Moana-a-Toi - is home to incredible surfing, white-sand beaches and New Zealand’s only active marine volcano.  Tauranga, with 130,000 residents, is the largest city on the Bay of Plenty and fifth largest in New Zealand.

12 March - Napier (B/L/D):  The Southern Hemisphere’s answer to Miami Beach - at least when it comes to Art Deco architecture - Napier has a perfect mix of natural and man-made beauty.  The historic district, which was mostly constructed in the 1930s after a massive earthquake and subsequent fires destroyed the city in 1931, was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.

13 March - Wellington (B/L/D):  New Zealand’s cool little capital is located at the southern tip of the North Island, meaning it’s blessed with a beautiful waterfront, fresh seafood and unpredictable weather.

14 March - Akaroa (Christchurch) (B/L/D):  With a distinctly continental flair, which stands out against the country’s Maori roots and British colonial history, Akaroa is New Zealand’s only town to have originally been established by the French and is the oldest European settlement on the South Island.  French settlers first arrived in 1840 only to discover that the British had been granted dominion of the country after the Treaty of Waitangi, but the French remained and left their mark.

15 March - Port Chalmers (Dunedin) (B/L/D):  Much of New Zealand feels like England, by way of Polynesia.  There are a few exceptions, though, the distinctly Scottish city of Dunedin, named after the Scottish Gaelic name for Edinburgh.  Dunedin hosts New Zealand’s only castle, Larnach Castle.

16 March - Milford Sound - Fiordland National Park (B/L/D):  Nothing can prepare you for the majesty of Milford Sound, star of Fiordlands National Park.  New vistas mesmerize at each turn - towering Mitre Peak, plunging waterfalls, bottlenose and dusky dolphins, fur seals, Fiordland crested penguins.

17 & 18 March - At Sea (B/L/D).

19 March - Melbourne (AUS) (B/L/D):  This is Australia’s cosmopolitan heart with cutting-edge art and architecture, historic galleries, attractions and museums, plus a dizzying range of restaurants, bistros, markets and bars.  It’s renowned for its sporting culture, home to the esteemed Melbourne Cricket Ground and Australian rules football teams.

20 March - At Sea (B/L/D).

21 March - Port Arthur (B/L/D):  The fascination of the convict era, together with the dramatic coastal scenery of Tasmania, comes to life with this opportunity to discover the scenic Tasman Peninsula and view some of the extraordinary geological features of this area.

22 March - Hobart, Tasmania (B/L/D):  Tasmania once the butt of many jokes, is finally cool.  The little Australian island is home to stunning landscapes, old-growth forests and exceptional local produce.  Lording over all this goodness is Hobart, the island’s creative capital.  Although its remoteness might once have made it feel provincial, the city has truly come into its own in recent years.

23 March - At Sea (B/L/D).

24 March - Disembarkation - City Tour of Sydney (B/L):  As you disembark the Noordam, you will be met by your expert guide to spend the day exploring Sydney, take in iconic highlights around the famous harbor-side city.  Admire the swoop of Sydney Harbour Bridge and the sails of the Sydney Opera House.  Lunch will be enjoyed aboard a Sydney harbor cruise.  After lunch, it’s time to tickle your toes in the sands of Manly Beach then head over to Bondi Beach.  The day will end with the sights of downtown Sydney, and a scenic drive to The Gap and Watson’s Bay.  Finally returning to your hotel for the next 3 nights.

25 March - Sydney (B):  Today you visit the Three Sisters on a Full Day tour of the majestic Blue Mountains including Featherdale Wildlife Park, Scenic World and a guided tour of ANZ Stadium (home of the Olympic Games).

26 March - Sydney (B):  A free day to visit Paddy’s Market, Circular Quay, Darling Harbour or at your leisure discover your own Sydney.

27 March - Sydney to Cairns (B):  After breakfast, you will be transferred out to the airport for your flight to Cairns.  Upon arrival in Cairns, The Park Regis City Quay invites you to discover Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef during your stay.  Relax and unwind in your modern hotel room and enjoy facilities including an outdoor swimming pool, rooftop sundeck and BBQ area.

28 March - Cairns (B/L):  For an experience of a lifetime, Quicksilver’s wave piercing catamarans and friendly crew will take you to a reef at the very edge of Australia’s Continental Shelf, to an underwater world that is a dazzling kaleidoscope of colour and brilliance.  Agincourt Reef is a magnificent ribbon reef where you can experience first-hand the magic that is the Great Barrier Reef.

29 March - Cairns (B/L):  You will travel to Kuranda by scenic railway and then spend some free time in the village.  Wander through the many shops and local markets, which offer a full range of local handicrafts, souvenirs, and gifts.  You will then be transferred to Rainforestation Nature Park, where you will enjoy a delicious Australian BBQ lunch, a guided tour of the rainforest on board an amphibious Army Duck, and the Pamagirri Aboriginal Dance performance, followed by the Dreamtime Walk.  You will learn how to throw a boomerang, see spear-throwing demonstrations, and learn about aboriginal culture.

30 March - Cairns (B/D):  Your last full day in Australia is a free day in Cairns.  This evening you have a chance to reminisce with your fellow travellers at an evening BBQ.

31 March - Cairns (via Auckland) to Canada (B/L/D):  This morning, you will say goodbye to Australia as you are transferred to the Cairns Airport for your return flights to Canada with amazing memories of Down Under and friends for life.
